Just Sayinnn

Ya so I was reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and I just realized that Dorian's lover's name is Sibyl Vane. Not the same spelling, but sure sounds a lot like the word VAIN. Connection?? I think so.

I don't know if anyone else saw that or if I'm just that guy who finds stuff like that.

actually i was thinking more along the line of weather VANE. because she showed us the direction Dorian's life would take.

I was thinking more along the lines of Kevin. I made the connection because Dorian only loved Sibyl for her beauty and all of her characters, not for Sibyl's true self. As soon as Sibyl showed that real person to Dorian, he left her on her knees planning to kill herself.

Does the name Sibyl mean anything to anyone? Sibyl: prophetess. Yes? No?
Well if you combine Sibyl the prophet with Sam's idea of VANE, her "propheteering" skills are spot on for Dorian Gray.
Looking at Chelsea's idea, she seems to be thinking of the Sibyl with the thirteen-or so personalities. That would make plenty of sense considering Sibyl Vane is an actress and plays various people.
Kevin, I think you're trying to say whatever Chelsea said. Either way, her name is up to interpretation and it all relies on what Oscar Wilde wanted Sibyl to do in the novel...

I agree with both Kevin and Chelsea. Sibyl's last name is Vane, which of course can be attributed to the synonym VAIN, which is the obsession with ones own appearance. Dorian fell in love with Sibyl because she was beautiful like himself and she seemed to entrance Dorian much like he does to everyone else in the story.
